SPECIAL EVENTS 2008
DC TOUR, Sunday, March 9 (SOLD OUT!)
Tour Chair Judy Morenoff announces that the tour, sponsored by the LCA
and to be led by professional Tour Guide and Luxmanor volunteer, Ellen Gold,
is sold out! The private 5-hour tour by chartered bus will leave from and return
to the Luxmanor Elementary School.
APRIL 12-13, LUXMANOR 70th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION WEEKEND
GARDEN TOUR Saturday and Sunday, April 12 and 13
Co-chairs Gail Klein and Evy Spies are seeking more gardens of every kind
to be held open for visiting Luxmanor neighbors on a free, self-guided tour on Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13, from 12-4. A list of gardens and their special features will be provided by Gail and her co-chair, Evy Spies.
(Children must be accompanied and supervised by adults.)
Please offer your own garden or nominate another that you know holds special interest, for consideration by the committee. Gardens chosen for the tour are not expected to be at their best in mid-April, but their interesting "bones" will be there, along with ideas for eco-gardening, veggie plots, bird and butterfly temptations,
garden art, and patio and water features, etc. Your azaelas may not be in bloom, but we can see where they are!
Owners do not have to be at home during tour hours, but may be available, if they choose to be, to answer questions from interested fellow gardeners.
Children are encouraged to open old fashioned lemonade stands near their neighborhood Open Gardens, in the spirit of 1938. If your children would like to contribute their profits to charity (not required) check out this website:http://www.alexslemonade.org If your children will enjoy setting up, decorating and running a lemonade stand on that Saturday or Sunday afternoon, we will help you to find a great location. Email: Evy.spies@yahoo.com
Email Gail Klein at kleingd@verizon.net to suggest or to offer a garden for consideration, or to volunteer to help with planning and presenting the tour. All gardens are welcomed, but Windermere and The Oaks gardens are especially needed!
SOFTBALL GAME, Sunday Afternoon, April 13
Softball "commissioner," Andrew Weiss will rent a field and is keeping
a spreadsheet listing players, locales, ages, and tee shirt sizes. He will be the
go-to person for the two team captains, and together, they will decide on rules of play for this fun-only game, and (:::shudder:::) weather issues. Luxmanor residents of all ages and skill-levels are urged to sign up to play for the honor of their respective "sides" of Tuckerman Lane, andfor the sheer fun of it. Give Andrew
your names(s), street, phone number, childrens' ages, and everyone's tee-shirt sizes. The first 50 players to sign up and play will each receive a free tee-shirt
from Herb Weinstein (Struttman Terrace) owner of Special Tees, who has donated Tee shirts to be printed with custom team logos for all players!
Email weissa@gunet.georgetown.eduto join a team!
All Luxmanor children from age 7 and up may play, but must be accompanied
by and supervised by an adult family member who will be responsible in case
of injury.
Our old trophy has disappeared. A cherished Volleyball trophy has been offered by sympathetic Tilden Woods neighbor, Ed Levine. We are thrilled to have his trophy for presentation to the winning team, and feel it perfectly exemplifies the spirit of the occasion!
Po Chang has volunteered to buy soft drinks and ice provided by the LCA,
and deliver them to the ball field and to supervise their distribution to players.
PROGRESSIVE DINNER, Saturday, April 12 (SOLD OUT!)
(We have over 70 guests and a paid waiting list.)
A gala surprise menu, authentic (in style) but using modern kitchen tools and technology and mostly make-ahead recipes, is almost set. Recipes for the
luxurious dinner menu will be tested and finalized at a meeting of the eight
dinner hostesses and their co-hostess/sous-chefs, on March 15. A three-
course formal dinner will be presented at each dinner house. A party for all,
with a signature cocktail and 1930s style canapes will begin the evening,
which will conclude with a fabulous dessert buffet where all guests will gather
once again following their dinners. Every guest couple will prepare either
an hors d'oeuvre or dessert chosen by them from the menu researched by
the committee.
We would love to have live music for swing dancing and listening pleasure
at the dessert house. Please email Lynnwaters@aol.com with suggestions
for a (free) combo which can play that great 1930s music! "All they can eat"
desserts and an admiring, appreciative audience will be their reward!
UNCLE TOM'S CABIN TOUR and BIRTHDAY PARTY, Sunday, April 13.
(The cabin will be open during the late afternoon, exact times to be announced.)
John Beamer has made arrangements with the Park Service for Luxmanor residents ONLY to be admitted to this private event. Visitors to the cabin will
park on Tilden Lane and walk to Uncle Tom's cabin for a guided tour by a
Park Service expert. A "Birthday Party" for all comers will follow the tour,
weather permitting, in John and Fran Beamer's adjoining backyard.
Children are absolutely welcome, but must be accompanied by adults!
We need Volunteers to set up and serve birthday cake and to purchase
and ice the soft drinks (could coordinate with softball drinks volunteer,
Po Chang.)
We need more 9x13 frosted "birthday cakes" (a regular cake mix
of any flavor is perfect; "Happy 70th Birthday, Luxmanor!" decorations a
plus!) Please email LynnWaters@aol.comto volunteer a cake.
THE ANNUAL WINE AND HORS D'OEUVRES PARTY, Friday, May 9
The Annual Spring Party is just one month after the Anniversary Weekend!
Fortunately, we have an established "formula" for this party, which honors
our newest neighbors, and is free for ALL ADULT residents of Luxmanor, Windermere,
and The Oaks. Reservations are required for the party, which
is a much looked forward-to tradition, and a happy conclusion to our Special
Events 70th Anniversary Year.
This year, in response to requests from repeat guests, we will begin and
conclude the gathering a little later in the evening. Wine and soft drinks
will be provided by the LCA, and a special gift will be given to each of our
2007-2008 new residents who are attending their first Annual Spring Wine
and Hors d'oeuvres gathering.
Last year we had to turn away late reservations because there are space limitations for this event. To secure a place on the guest list, email your
reservation with names and phone numbers; and tell us what you will be
bringing to contribute to our hors d'oeuvres buffet to: LynnWaters@aol.com.
