Previously in 2010...

Hello Neighbors,

I hope that you have marked your calendars for our upcoming Spring Events. Our programs and get- togethers, I believe, will certainly help to begin to put behind us the blizzard of 2010 and the horrors that accompanied it.

Our Arts in the Cabin (April 10 and 11) is right around the corner. We are in need of volunteers to help at the cabin during the show and a volunteer to print labels about the artists' work, which will accompany each piece. It is also not too late to participate, so please contact our chair, Varda Avnisan, if you are interested or would like more information Email Varda. This year we are also planning an Artists' Reception, to be held on Sun April 11, from 3-5pm, where you will have the opportunity to talk with the artists about their work.

LCA's Annual Spring Fling will take place on Friday, May 14 and we are still in need of a house that can accomodate approx 70 neighbors. This event is an informal cocktail party, held from 6-8pm. You provide the house, we do the setting-up, provide the refreshments, and clean up afterwards)

Our Open Gardens, chaired by our own resident and master gardner, Gail Klein, will take place on Saturday, May 29, 1-4pm, with a raindate of Sun., May 30, same time. If you have a rain garden, pond, perennial garden, bird/butterfly garden, shade garden, or any plant/garden/landscape of interest, please consider opening it to your neighbors. A perfectly manicured garden is most definitely not required, especially after what our gardens endured over the winter. Please contact Gail if you would be interested in participating. Email Gail Klein

Lastly, our annual softball game will be held on Father's Day, June 20. More information at a later date.

If you are able to help out with any of our needs, please email me at the address below.

We look forward to celebrating spring in style, and look forward to seeing you at these wonderful, community-sponsored events.

SPECIAL EVENTS 2009

Our Luxmanor Lemonade sellers did a fabulous job
yesterday!  It was warm and muggy -- but the rain
held off, and "Luxmanor Lemonade, 2009" was a
huge success!

Rachel Canning and her sister Mairead raised $50.00
for The Humane Society!!!! They sold GS cookies and
iced tea, in addition to lemonade. Notice the pretty
yellow chrysanthemum plant--they didn't miss a bet!
(Mairead had gone home for supplies when this picture
was taken. The other child is a neighborhood friend,
who enjoyed helping :-)

Lemonade 1

Below is the stand run by Jaden, shown here on the
left, with a friend who helped her, and Mom, Carol Liu,
in yellow.
Neighborhood dogs wag their appreciation for the
funds raised by Jaden on behalf of Pet Connect Rescue!

Lemonade 2

Fred and Danielle Horne are old Hands at
Luxmanor Lemonade: They had a stand last year,
too. Danielle says, "We love doing this!"  Mom,
Francoise Carrier, helped out, as they sold their
lemonade and homemade Blondies and
Cookies for The Wildlife Conservation Society.

Lemonade 3

Unfortunately, your reporter didn't get to the stand
run by Christian and Wolfgang, with help from
Christian's mom, Linda Brown. If anyone has a
picture of Christian's and Wolfgang's lemonade stand,
where they raised funds for the Montgomery County
Humane Society, we'll be very happy to publish it!

Thanks to all the moms and dads who helped out,
to everyone who generously bought lemonade at
multiple locations, and to Evy Spies for coordinating
"Luxmanor Lemonade" again this year :-)

Special Events 2008-2009

Books & Brunch
Our annual Books & Brunch gathering was held in October, once again
at the home of Po and April Chang, with the charming assistance of the
Chang children, Marby and Davina.
After guests had chatted and munched their way through a delicious pot
luck brunch, topped off by mimosas, and everyone had left with armloads
of new-to-them books brought for the exchange, more than 200 books
were left to be delivered by April to The Friends of the Library to help
support their fundraising efforts.

Barbara Blaylock has already offered to host this favorite Luxmanor
Citizens Association event next fall!

Luxmanor Art Show
Looking ahead, a community art show is in the planning stages for later
this winter. We hope to hold the show at the Henson Cabin -- Uncle
Tom's Cabin -- with Park and Planning's enthusiastic cooperation. A
Luxmanor neighbor with experience in mounting art exhibitions has
offered to coordinate the art, and Paula is working with the Parks'
staff to  choose a date.

Do you paint? Draw? Do sculpture? Take artist-quality photographs? Do you
have neighbors who you know have created terrific art of any kind, and who
should be encouraged to show it to the rest of us?
All kinds of art are welcome!  Let's make this the beginning of yet another
great Luxmanor neighborhood tradition! Watch for details here and on
the listserv.

Softball Game
Nancy Feldman is gearing up for another Sunday morning Luxmanor Ball Game!
Despite dreary weather and a sleep-deprived group (which had partied very late
the night before at our 70th Anniversary Progressive Dinner Dance) everyone
agreed that last year's game was terrific fun, and there was no doubt that we'd
play again this spring. We'll let you know as soon as Nancy has a definite date
for a field!

Garden Tour and "Luxmanor Lemonade"
By popular demand, we will once again open Luxmanor, Windermere and The Oaks
gardens for enthusiastic gardeners (or "gardening wannabes.") The tour will be held
several weeks later this year, on a May weekend, so an entirely different set of plantings
will be flourishing.
Gail Klein, who is a horticultural professional, will once again chair, and she is looking
for all varieties of interesting gardens to feature on her tour. Please volunteer yours,
(or anonymously nominate your neighbors'!)
Evy Spies will coordinate "Luxmanor Lemonade" stands in several locations.
Kids: start planning your own unique stand! Proceeds from the sale of lemonade may
be donated in part or entirely to the young proprietors' favorite charities!

Spring Wine and Hors D'oeuvres Party
We have the wine already!  When we decided to postpone last year's
annual event, the wine was already purchased. So all we need is YOU,
the guests, and your favorite hors d'oeuvre!
Selma and Norman Kunitz have very graciously renewed their offer
to host the party, which, as always, will honor all newcomers to Luxmanor,
Windermere, and The Oaks. This year that means any adults who have
moved into the neighborhood since the 2007 party!  As always, every
Luxmanorite is urged to attend -- and, as always, we will have a cutoff
number, because a house can only hold so many! In 2007, we had to turn
away several who waited too long to make a reservation. The date and
time and exact format will be announced in the Greensheet and on the
listserv as simultaneously as possible, so be ready to sign up as soon as
you get the word!

Every one of these events depends on volunteers to make it happen.
Please plan to join us, to meet neighbors who will become friends, and
to participate in the rich life of Luxmanor by helping us to put on one or
more of this year's Special Events.
